Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Kolkata’s first underwater Metro line today, marking a significant milestone for the city.

The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of the East-West Corridor features India’s inaugural transportation tunnel beneath a river.

To celebrate this achievement, PM Modi embarked on an immersive metro ride from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan, sharing the experience with enthusiastic schoolchildren, making it a memorable occasion for the nation.

India’s groundbreaking underwater metro line links Kolkata and Howrah, passing beneath the Hooghly River.

The deepest metro station in the country, situated at Howrah, plunges to a depth of 30 meters.

Kolkata Metro network is expanding by 11.45 kilometers, encompassing extensions on the Orange Line, Green Line, and Purple Line.

Since its establishment in 1984, Kolkata’s Metro network has undergone remarkable growth. A notable surge occurred between 2014 and 2023, with a record-breaking annual expansion of 14.23 kilometers, resulting in a 36% overall increase since its inception.

The current Kolkata Metro network spans 47.93 kilometers, encompassing the North-South Corridor, East-West Corridor, and the Joka-Esplanade Corridor. Looking ahead, there are plans for an additional 13.27 kilometers of extension, emphasizing the pivotal role of India’s transportation infrastructure and marking a historic achievement for Kolkata and the nation.
